Spotlight Artist Interview
Georgia Landau
May 2020
SPA: Tell us about your art. What do you create?
Georgia: My main media is clay – but no matter what media I use I always involve human figures, animals, and combinations of those things -- sometimes monsters -- but my monsters are always friendly. It’s really hard for me NOT to make them friendly.
SPA: Has the health crisis changed your artwork in any way? Are you working differently?
Georgia: The crisis definitely changed what I’m working on and the media I’m using. Now that I’m staying home more I’m enjoying my time drawing. One of the drawings I recently did is based on a little sculpture I had made. He became the subject of one of my recent drawings.

SPA: What are your goals for next year? Are there any new projects you would like to create?
Georgia: I’d like to get back to my figure drawing and sculpture groups because you learn constantly when you are drawing from a live model. I could be turning more toward drawing and painting again. I also think it would be fun to do a mural – something for a kid’s wall.
SPA: The creatures you create look like they stepped out of the pages of a fairy tale. Does your work have a story? What is your inspiration?
Georgia: I start to draw and see who appears. Once my creatures are out there they start to form a story. For example, in this piece you have the mediator in the center trying to resolve a conflict between these two other characters -- and they have their backup thugs behind them. But this little guy in the center is trying to keep the peace. I used to always want to be a children’s book illustrator. Maybe if there’s a children’s book writer out there we could collaborate.
