July 1 - August 8, 2020 Woodblock Prints by Autumn Tomlinson Artist Statement: The work seen here was inspired by the three years I worked in Antarctic. What started out as an attempt to illustrate an Antarctic Origin Story of my own making evolved into an investigation based off of environmental observations in the ice, and a symbolic overlay of objects and action. Throughout this work I begin to play with the layering technique that is ingrained within the medium of printmaking itself. Drawn to the muting nature of this process and the ability to concretely divide printed layers, I find the process an interesting means of displaying importance and inciting curiosity. I have since moved to printing on Mylar and Vellum due to the translucent qualities. The Quick Change gallery is a mini art venue created from an up-cycled phone booth located on the second floor of Studio Place Arts. |
Digital Exhibition Series Shelter in Place: July 10, 2020 Our third installment of a 3-part digital exhibit of artwork made during the global health crisis shutdown. The Governor’s executive order in March marked a precipitous time of change and adjustment for artists, creatives and others. Artists were challenged on many personal levels by the public health crisis; some were moved to create artwork in response. Most artists experienced a cataclysmic alteration of the art world itself, as gallery exhibitions, art fairs, and museums were quickly cancelled and closed. Additionally, sources of materials and space that artists use in their art-making practices became potentially less available. This period of time nonetheless has offered a chance for new focus and different provocations. Exhibiting Artists: Alexandra Bottinelli, Paul Calter, Jeanne Cariati, Theresa DeSalvio, Linda Di Sante, Mark Dixon, Cindy Griffith, Marianne Kotch, Nikolas Kotovich, Marie LaPre Grabon, Joan Mellon, Maggie Neale, Katharine Noiva, Julia Pavone, Kathy Stark, Katalin Tolgysi, Janet Van Fleet, Dana Walrath Click here for Artist Statements and Artwork Details... |

January 21 – March 7, 2020 Reception: Sat., Jan. 25 from 3-5pm Making My Mark: Recent Monoprints by Lois Beatty “Beatty’s pieces are at once playful and elegant, layering colors and lines into soft, dreamlike, configurations. Loosely tangled strands of color weave in and out of the foreground. The strands wax and wane in thickness, producing a sense of languid, graceful movement, slowed perhaps, as if under water…. She creates a visual archaeology of the layers that have gone into the print by burying shapes so deep in the background that they appear only as floating, pastel-colored, marks, while letting darker, more intense shapes and hues loom large. This lends a three-dimensional feel to a flat surface that tells the story of its own creation, even as the tangled strands of color—a recurring feature in Beatty’s pieces—disrupt this sense of chronology.” — Emma Jean Holley, The Valley News |
