Vermont Folk Art Lecture
Jane Beck
Sunday, January 17
3-4:30 PM
Much of Vermont’s folk art is personal: a stair rug capturing the history of a family, a weathervane symbolizing the artists career in the railroad, or a quilt representing the memories of farm life. This slide presentation and lecture touches on the informal process of learning a traditional art, life crises that spur the creation of folk art, and the emotional bond that exists between the maker and the receiver of a folk art object.

Jane Back, founder of the Vermont Folklife Center, served as executive director from 1984 to 2007. From 1978-1982, she was engaged in a survey of Vermont folk art, which culminated in a major traveling exhibition: “Always in Season: Folk Art and Traditional Culture in Vermont.” Since then, she has put together more than 30 folk art exhibits that have included a wide range of materials from textiles to carvings, from whirligigs to miniatures, all exquisitely crafted from informal traditions and practices passed down the generations.

Drawn Portrait
Charles Woodard
Sundays Jan. 31; Feb. 7; 14; 21 & 28
1:30-4:30 PM
This is a short course in the art of capturing likeness. In the process we will study such details as the proportion of the head, the placement of facial features, and how to render them in convincing ways. However, we will explore the idea that restraint in detail may say more in the pursuit of capturing personality or attitude than rendered exactness. Students will be using chalk with toned and untoned papers, and work from sitting models. Materials for this class, to be purchased ahead of time, will be available locally (contact SPA for a list).
Members $185/Non-Members $205 (includes modeling fee)
Charles Woodard is a professional landscape and figurative painter from Calais, Vermont, working in pastel, oil and charcoal. He has spent much of his life as a naturalist as well as an artist. He says, “if you are an habitual observer, as I am, they go well together, each affording a different interpretive perspective.” He has studied with a number of artists, but identifies his mentor in drawing the figure as Burton Silverman.

Turn into a Digital Shutterbug!
Andrew Wellman
Friday, February 5
9:30AM – 2 PM (short break for lunch)
This workshop is designed to inspire a fresh understanding about how to use your digital cameral, now that you have likely retired your film camera(s) to an obscure closet corner. The workshop will cover how to make digital files (formerly a negative), how to organize them, and how to format digital files (considering image quality and size). There will also be a discussion about the technology itself: How digital sensors replace the film and how digital technology is different from and similar to film. Elissa Campbell
3 Thursdays: Feb 18; 25 & Mar 4

Van Gogh and Gaugin – The Odd Couple
Bob Manning
Saturday, Feb. 20
3-4:30 PM
This slide lecture presented by Bob Manning will focus on the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gouguin, two giants of modern art. With the hopes that his home in Arles would become center of the “School of the South,” Van Gogh persuaded Gauguin to join him in October of 1888 to create an artists’ commune. A clash of personalities doomed the relationship after only two months. Vincent’s direct and passionate approach to painting lays the foundation for what would later be called expressionism. Gauguin’s cerebral, flat pattern compositions point the way to 20th Century abstractionism and modern primitivism. Manning will make use of personal correspondence between Van Gogh and his brother and Gauguin’s “Intimate Journals.”

Bob Manning is a painter and art historian with degrees from Pratt Institute and the University of Hartford. His 25 years of teaching the history of 19th and 20th Century art has given him a keen interest and knowledge of that period. He has been a member of the Speaker’s Bureau since 2001.

Found Metal Wall Hangings
Craig Wiltse
2 Wednesdays: Feb. 24 & Mar. 3
4:30-7 PM
Almost everyone has seen sculptures made out of discarded objects. Found metal relief sculpture is different in that it is not meant to be a free standing sculpture. These works hang closely to a wall and often resemble paintings more than sculpture. You will select objects from a collection of materials. You will learn how to assemble these objects without the use of welding or heavy machinery. The result is a lightweight, fascinating tapestry of metal, complete with opening windows and doorways that reveal hidden, secret objects of your choosing! Materials and tools will be supplied, but bring your own artifacts!
Members $50/Non-Members $60
Craig Wiltse is primarily a painter, but has shown a variety of 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional works nationally. He received a Bachelors degree in fine art from Rochester Institute of Technology and a Masters degree in fine art from Johnson State College. Wet-on-Wet Painting
Craig Wiltse
Sat., Feb 27
12:30-4PM
Have you ever heard of the term wet-on-wet painting? It is a technique that truly allows its viewers to enjoy the richness of color and paint. By placing sheets of glass horizontally on tabletops the paint can be applied with a variety of applicators. The result is a myriad of rich, swirling textures and marbellizations that can be illuminated from the back. The color patterns and effects are fascinating and surprising. In this course you will learn a number of ways to apply the paint so that they will work successfully. Additionally, we will discuss planning your colors and using the color spectrum to give a brilliant sense of light to any type of painting. Glass will be supplied as a painting surface. Please bring a small, basic set of oil paints,

Memory Jug Workshop
Susan Hayward
Tues., April 13
1:00-3:00 PM
Memory jugs are remnants of the Victorian era, a time proud of visual clutter and consumed with collecting, when women frequently passed the hours creating hobby arts and crafts, according to an essay by Brooke Davis Anderson of an exhibition called “The Art and Mystery of Memory Jugs” at the Diggs Gallery at the University of North Carolina. Participants in this workshop will cover a jug or crock with a combination adhesive/grout and variety of generic objects will be applied into the malleable surface. A diverse assortment of miscellaneous memory items for the memory pot will include seashells, buttons, beads, shards of broken china, charms, doll parts, coins and keys. Students may bring some of their own memorabilia for the pot: The paraphernalia at the bottom of the kitchen “junk” drawer, broken jewelry, relatively flat 3 dimensional treasures and fragments of their pat. The result will be a conversation piece to be cherished. Students will provide the instructor with a materials fee of $30 (includes crock, broken china, thin set, mortar and memory items)
Member $30/Non-member $40
Susan has an extensive background in historic preservation and is a hunter-gatherer by nature. She is in her element with this art form, combining history and recycling, in alchemy at its best.
