Nature Prints
Lyna Lou Nordstrom
Fri., Sept. 24
10:30 AM – 4PM (½ hr break for lunch)
Using the bounty of spring or summer’s new growth, we will create prints from the impressions of the grasses and leaves.  Kitakata, a paper similar to rice paper, and Akua Intaglio nontoxic printing inks will allow participants to develop rich colors on the semi transparent paper. The pressure of the press picks up every detail and the plants also retain some of the ink from going through the press, so the layering possibilities and ghost images are endless.   Using lace or other textures can add more variety.  Seasoned printmakers or beginners welcome.  Materials fee to the instructor:  $10.
Members $45/Non-Members $55

Lyna Lou Nordstrom began printmaking in 1995.  Her previous incarnation was "fabric artist."  Her colorful monotypes have won awards in juried shows throughout New England and Canada. In 2006 she received a month long Residency Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center.  She has taught classes at the high school and adult level for years and is on the Vermont Arts Council's juried artist roster.

Introduction to Textile Design
Laura Perry
Wed: Oct. 13; 20 & 27
5-8 PM
Where to designers get their ideas?  Where and how do you start to design?  This class is for students who are interested in learning more about the design process and in particular textile design.  Students will be introduced to a variety of inspirational starting points and ideas.  Approaches to recording research, experimentation with visual ideas and how to begin the design process will be studied and practiced.  Using a variety of media and materials including paint, oil pastels, chalk pastels and charcoal, students will experiment with still life drawing and painting, to create surface patterns and textures for the textile ideas produced later in the sessions.  Textile techniques such as weaving, printing and resist painting are practices using paper rather than fabric as a base.  Students will produce a final design board, which includes initial ideas, research collected and a development of ideas and end results.  The course includes a lot of playing with ideas in a short amount of time, with the aim that students can develop areas of interest on their own outside of class or in future courses in more detail.  This course is for beginners & intermediate students.  Previous drawing experience is not necessary.  Materials fee:  $25 to the instructor. (Materials are ordered in advance; please enroll by Oct 1.)
Members $85/Non-Members $95

Laura Perry has been an art instructor in the UK for more than 10 years and now lives and works in Northfield, Vermont.  Laura received her BSc in Textile Design and Technology from Huddersfield University, UK and her Post Graduate Certificate of Education from Leeds University, UK.  Her colorful textile collages have been exhibited in galleries in both Vermont and Great Britain.

Scribble Collage
Jane Davies
Fri., Oct. 15
9:30AM – 5PM (with 1 hr break for lunch)
Collage is a vibrant, exciting medium whose potential for creative expression requires only a willingness to jump in and explore the possibilities.  The immediacy of collage gets at the heart of the creative process, putting together images and materials with an open mind and a sense of adventure.  It is not about making pretty pictures in a technically proficient way; it is about trusting your intuitive visual and conceptual associations and using collage as a tool for self expression.

This workshop is based on Jane’s book, “Collage Journeys:  A Practical Guide to Creating Personal Artwork.”  We will create our own collage materials by making “paint playgrounds” and scribble drawings using acrylic, watercolor, crayons, pastel, charcoal, and other materials.  If you are “not artistic” or “can’t draw”, try drawing and painting with the intention of tearing up the results for collage!  It is definitely in the category of dance-like-nobody-is-watching, and a great way to engage your creative spirit.  We will experiment with various approaches to collage using these paintings-drawings as our foundation.  Contact SPA for a suggested materials list; Jane will offer items, such as paper and paints, for sale during the workshop.
Members $80/Non-Members $90

From potter, pottery painter/craftsperson, to collage artist, designer, and teacher, Jane Davies is about using color with passion and panache.  Davies, who studied ceramics at Bennington College in Vermont and the School for American Crafts in Rochester, New York, before opening her own studio in 1991, made her living selling her ceramics at craft shows and galleries.  She gradually transitioned into designing tableware, quilting fabric, paper goods, stationery, and other projects for a myriad of prestigious manufacturers.  In addition, she has written 3 books:  “A Glaze of Color: Creating Color and Design on Ceramics”, 2004; “Collage with Color: Create Unique Collages in Vibrant Color”, 2005; and “Collage Journeys: a Practical Guide to Creating Personal Artwork”, 2008.

10AM – 2PM
The purpose of this workshop is to give students a brief introduction to fashion proportion and illustration techniques used in the garment industry today.  Over a three day period we will look at how fashion sketches are used to communicate customer, markets, and personal style.  We will follow the process from croquis sketch to finished illustration, working with each individual’s abilities and strengths, in using fashion illustration as a personal means of expression.
