Give Us Some Blues
The color blue has had a touch of magic to it since the beginning of time. Blue pigments on cave walls symbolized magical elements; blue pigment mixed with fat was rubbed onto Celtic Warriors for protection; blue tattoos were magic symbols for many cultures. Now, the word blue has come to mean so much more than a color: it is a mood or feeling, it is a form of music, it is a political bias, it is a verbalization of infinity, and it is the highest level of excellence and the best there is to offer. What will you offer to this exhibit?
Application Deadline: January 22, 2010
Show Dates: March 2 – April 17, 2010
NOTE: This exhibit coincides with our annual fundraiser, the BASH, on March 13, 2010.
Line it Up
This show will include both traditional forms of drawing and what’s referred to as new drawing. Examples of traditional drawings will include a wide variety of subjects, styles and formats, and will involve basic drawing implements: pencils, pens, charcoal and markers. Part of the show will include artwork that explores lines made from nontraditional materials, e.g., string, matches, wire and more.
Application Deadline: March 5, 2010
Show Dates: April 27 – June 12, 2010
Anarchy
It’s the absence of government or utopian society to some, and to others it’s a statement of revolution, disorder and chaos. The diversely different concepts of and reactions to anarchy make good fodder for art. Next summer, we’ll be mounting an exhibit that honors Barre’s historic connections to the Anarchist Movement and persuades artists to explore the idea of Anarchy. How do you envision anarchy? Be conceptual or concrete; all media welcome.
Application Deadline: April 23, 2010
Exhibit Dates: June 22 – July 31, 2010
On the Planet
SPA is organizing an international exhibit showcasing artwork and performances by American and Japanese artists in September, 2010, in recognition of the 10th Anniversary of the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity. All 3 floors of the SPA building will be used for an exhibit from September 1-22; in addition, there will be an exhibit mounted at Flynndog in Burlington and outdoors at abandoned quarries located at Millstone Hill.
Around the world, the diversity of animal life has been affected by the fragmentation of habitat, over-exploitation of wild resources, introduction of exotic species, air and water pollution, population growth, and long-term climate change.
We are particularly interested in seeing proposals for installations (both for interior spaces and outside at the quarries), new media, and work in conceptual series.
Application Deadline: May 1, 2010 (preliminary sketches, models, videos & other plans are welcomed; meetings will likely be scheduled to discuss the projects)
