Weathering
It Out
In the past year, we’ve experienced pelting rains,
hurricanes, unrelenting blizzards, flash floods, and
mudslides. Some are predicting a dramatic shift in
weather patterns for the region; others say it’s an episodic
reality. Artists are urged to explore how they are
weathering the weather, using a variety of media and perhaps
incorporating
items salvaged from a weather event.
Look back and forward. Let Mother
Nature know you’re on the clock.
Show Dates:
Jan. 24 – Feb. 25, 2012
Deadline: Dec
9, 2011
Storytime:
Narrative, Allegory & Graphics
Turning away from Religious and Historical
subjects, the Impressionists focused on depicting moments in everyday
life,
dumping symbolism, and capturing the real colors that light creates.
Modernists
moved on to purge both sculpture and painting of the narrative, or
storytelling
impulse. Art should only stand for itself, and form, color, and surface
were
everything. In contemporary art, we’ve come back to acknowledging
the
inescapable fact that it’s all about humans, who are storytellers
and
meaning-seekers. So, we’re looking for installation, video,
conceptual pieces,
graphic novels, collage and other media – whatever gets us going
and asking
What happened? and Why?
Show Dates:
Mar. 6
– Apr. 7, 2012
Deadline:
Jan 20,
2012
Never
Forget
This is a multimedia, group exhibit focusing on the
challenges and journeys of creative women, past and present and in the
United
States and overseas. The show, to be
displayed in the third floor gallery space at SPA, will include work
primarily
by women artists from Vermont and allow others to portray the journey
of
creative women as they saw it. This show
is supported in part by the Vermont Committee of the National Museum of
Women in the Arts.
Show Dates:
Mar. 6 – Apr. 7, 2012
Deadline: Jan
20, 2012
Sweet
This sumptuous, multi-media show pays homage
to beautiful edible sweets: hard
candies, cakes, pies & gumballs - we’ve all looked into
sweets-filled glass
cases in awe. And, throughout history,
explorers sought out new sweets to satisfy our desires: chocolate
- or nectar of the gods; sweet
spices like cinnamon; and more. Today,
there are “cupcake wars” on television and isn’t
Grandma remembered most fondly
for her frosting-coated tea ring? Simply
put, we love our sweets.
Show Dates:
April
17 – May 26, 2012
Deadline:
Feb. 17,
2012
s-EYE-nce: a
science/visual arts fusion
Lots of the
visuals that come out of scientific inquiry, like photomicrographs of
the
mouthparts of tiny insects or traces of elementary particles like
quarks, are both beautiful and compelling. Some artists are
using and modifying such
images; others are using the techniques (recording transformations),
processes
(such as repeating sequences and patterns), and methods (observation
and
replication) of science to inform their art. Artists are encouraged to
explore
the evolution and discoveries of science from all sides: existing and
emerging
sciences and fantastical takes on science. Cool gadgets and equipment
get bonus
points!
Show Dates:
June 5
– July 7, 2012
Deadline:
April 6,
2012
