The Inspired Image
Robert K. Carsten, P.S.A.
Saturday, July 19
9:30 AM-4:30 PM (with ½ hr break for lunch)
Inspiration will reign in this comprehensive, fun and energetic workshop! Using concepts outlined in Robert's acclaimed article, "Be Your Own Best Critic" in the June 2007 issue of the Pastel Journal, we'll explore intriguing qualities of dramatic and other evocative light effects within our pastel paintings: we will work with tonalism to discover the roles that tonal zoning, pigment density, low-key colors, mass and composition play in achieving a sense of luminosity.
We will work with the properties of color, considering the roles that saturation and temperature, high-key color and edges play in achieving sensational light effects. We'll explore ways to develop painterly, more poetic imagery with emphasis on edges and strokes and more. Class includes demonstrations, discussions, critiques and plenty of working time. All levels are welcome.
Subject matter will be up to each participant: Please bring either photos of landscapes etc. or objects to work from, pastels, paper and a board to work on.

Camp Creative - a summertime camp for young artists
SPA is offering 2 dynamic, multi-media 1-week camp sessions for young artists this summer during the month of July that will inspire youths to learn through the artistic processes of Henri Matisse.

• Camp Creative for ages 7-10: Week of July 21, Mon-Fri, 9:30 AM-Noon

Children at any level are able to successfully indulge in Matisse's masterworks while learning about one of history's most prominent figures. The camp sessions will include learning through the inspiration of Matisse in such mediums as watercolor and acrylic paint, charcoal, chalk, ink and pencil, as well as clay and collage. Some subjects would include copies of masterworks, figure drawing, landscape, still life and studies of favorite animals.
SPA needs to plan for the summer season, so please contact SPA to reserve your space(s) no later than Friday, May 16, 2008. (NOTE: A non-refundable deposit of $40 will be due on May 16th; the remainder of the tuition for the camp session is due by June 30, 2008.)
